Pacific Crest Trail - June 26-28, 2000

Page 3 - The Thunder Rolls

After some pretty flat trail and some small ponds, we came to Upper Kinney Lake. We shouldn't have even been tired at this point, but we were. We'd already passed a group of backpackers heading the other direction, and laughed at them for "only going from Carson Pass to Ebbett's Pass". Guess we shouldn't have laughed so soon. As I posed for the picture by Upper Kinney, the thunder clouds were building in the distance...

As we left the trees surrounding the Kinney Lakes, we were passing some interesting volcanic peaks, which looked really imposing in the darkening skies.

By about mile 3, we were getting pretty tired, and stopped for a snack. It was starting to sprinkle, but we figured it'd "just blow over". I guess the lightning in the distance should've been a clue. I could already feel the blisters forming on my heels, but all I could think about was getting the pack off my back for a few minutes. We dug into the packs for food.

After our short snack stop, we pushed on into Raymond Meadows. The 2 mile hike through the open meadow was pretty unnerving with lightning crashing nearby. The fact that the only semi-tall trees around were all split from previous lightening storms, combined with the utter lack of wildlife, caused some concern. It was looking bleak.

Fortunately, we were closing in our first night's campsite...
