Pacific Crest Trail - July 3-6, 2001

Page 4 - Let's Get to the Campsite and Eat!

Day One: The Nipple, Lost Lakes, and the start of the Mokelumne Wilderness

As the trail neared a ridge (beyond which we knew was our campsite), we got a good view to the West of Summit City Canyon. I had actually hiked over to Fourth of July Lake (a few miles West in the canyon) the week prior to try to get some high-altitude exposure before the trip. It was kind of cool to see it from this side.

We finally made it to the Mokelumne Wilderness...

Either that's a really big sign, or Justin's really far behind it...

Cresting the ridge, the trail began to descend into another valley...which wasn't too exciting because that meant more climbing in the morning up and over Elephant's Back. But at least we were close to camp now!

As soon as we started down into the canyon, it became clear that the lakelets the guidebook had talked about weren't going to be the best camping of the trip. For one thing, the water looked pretty putrid, which was reason enough for me not to drink out of them (even with my purifier). For another, the only dry ground (in trees) around the biggest lakelet was too rocky and sloped to camp on. We finally found a halfway decent site not too far off the trail, which was sloped lightly enough that I wasn't afraid of sliding out of the tent in the middle of the night.

The problem was, the mosquitoes were starting to come out. Fortunately, my mom had bought both of us some really cool mosquito nets that cover the head, arms, and torso.

Only problem was, they didn't cover the butt, especially when you were, uh, "using the facilities". Let's just say that I was a bit itchy that night...

We prepared our wonderful dinner in a bag...

and then dug in to dinner. Too bad that freeze-dried food in general isn't very good, and this one in particular was pretty awful. As we lay in the tent, my stomach was revolting and making a ton of noise. It took me several hours to fall asleep that night. Fortunately, tomorrow was a new day, with (hopefully) better food and most likely a better campsite...
