Pre-Hike: Markleeville and The Deli

Certainly the best way to get revenge over something is to do the same exact thing again, only better... With that in mind, we once again drove several hours to the booming town of Markleeville to pick up a wilderness permit for the Mokelumne Wilderness, plus a campfire permit. This would enable us to legally backpack in the area.

After finishing our business at the ranger station, we hit "The Deli" (a deli) for lunch, just as we had the previous year. I think I even had the same thing I had the previous year. Justin couldn't wait to eat...I guess his stomach was grumbling.

Now, for a few weeks I'd had this plan to get an extra sandwich at "The Deli" and throw it in my pack, with the thought that I could eat that for dinner that night instead of having to cook (plus it would be real food). After a few hours of discussing it in the car, my dad convinced me that probably wasn't the best idea, because it's possible the mayonnaise would spoil in the heat before I ate the sandwich, and getting food poisoning the first night would not be very fun.

After lunch, we drove back up highway 88 and down Blue Lakes Road to the point where the PCT crosses the road. At that point we stopped and prepared to embark. Maybe Justin's lunch wasn't all he hoped it would be, because he had to make a run to the woods...

while I pondered how I was going to carry my waterbottle.

After pausing by the trailhead to take a picture (at least the trailhead was marked this year...see the little post between us?)...

...we threw on our packs...

...and waved goodbye as we headed off down the trail.
