Newly Engaged at the Equinox - February 19, 2001
Initially when they were introduced, they didn't really talk. Just a "Hi, nice to meet you..." and a handshake. That afternoon before the party, the group (8 of them) decided to have lunch down at Fisherman's Wharf. It was during the ride on the Muni bus to the wharf that they first began talking. Somehow the group got split up once inside the bus, and Kevin and Norvina happened to end up sitting next to one another at the back of the bus. Neither of them said a word for a good 5-7 minutes. Then Norvina, trying to think of a common topic to talk about, remembered from what little she knew of Kevin that he plays the guitar, and opened up with a comment to the effect of "So I hear you play guitar; how long have you been playing?"
And the rest is history...no, there's more.
So they started talking and talking - - about what schools they attended, how long they'd been working, their hobbies and the like. The bizarre thing they learned about one another was that they lived literally 30 seconds from one another - literally down the street. Maybe 3-4 minutes to walk to each others' house, which was weird and surprising. As for the party, they both had expected it to be kind of dull, but ended up having a great time.
The following Wednesday, Kevin called Norvina after contemplating for hours whether or not to do so. They talked for 2 hours without a dull moment, after which he asked her out. To his amazement, she said "yes", and that was the start of a new beginning...for both of them.
Too cold and rainy to wander outside, they sat in the car reminiscing and talking about how fast time has flown and about how great the past year had been. After a while, Kevin's tone of voice started sounding serious, and he pulled a small box from the center armrest. Norvina glanced over at the box and started hyperventilating. Kevin opened the box, told her he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, and asked her to be his wife. Eyes bugging out of their sockets, Norvina freaked out (in a good way), looked at the ring, looked back at Kevin, then back at the ring, took a minute to figure out what just happened, and then happily screeched a resounding "YES" to his question. And that was yet another start to a new chapter in their lives.
When not working, studying, or planning the wedding, Kevin enjoys a number of outdoor activities, such as mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, camping, volleyball, water-skiing, snow-skiing and snowboarding (and trying to convince Norvina to like at least one of these activities too). As mentioned above, he also likes playing guitar, and also likes golf, computers, music, and movies.
When she's not working 16 hour shifts (which she doesn't do too often) or planning the wedding (which is more work than work), Norvina enjoys playing the piano, roller-blading with Kevin, hanging out & catching up with old friends, shopping, and experimenting with cooking (and hoping Kevin doesn't get food poisoning from it). She recently decided that one of her life goals is to hike to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite (17 tough miles), which will probably be a feat requiring years of training - she already complains about easy 5 mile hikes. Unlike Kevin, she doesn't mind sitting in traffic, but freaks out driving on dark, windy two lane roads...typical city girl.
