Pacific Crest Trail - June 26-28, 2000

Introduction

The idea was simple... Justin and I planned to hike half of section J and all of section K of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) beginning at Ebbett's Pass, CA, and finishing at Donner Summit, CA. It would take 10 days, contain approximately 115 miles of prime trail and scenery, and include lots of fun.

Funny how things never work out the way you plan. I knew we were in trouble when I got off work on Friday, June 23, went home to pack for the trip, and started feeling sick. Pretty soon I had a 101 degree fever. And I was supposed to be driving up to my parent's house the next day so we could hit the trail on Sunday. I tried, but I couldn't drive the 3 hours to their house without risking an accident, so I sat home all day Saturday, sweating like crazy, but cold at the same time. I called Justin: "Justin, you're not going to believe this..."

By late Saturday night, the fever broke, so I got up Sunday, finished packing, loaded up my trusty Toyota truck, kissed Norvina goodbye, and set out on the road to my parents house. Aside from the brief bout with the flu, I was feeling pretty good, although trying to lift my 60 pound pack into the truck raised a warning flag as to my fitness level.

Monday morning, Justin showed up as planned... See the photos and accompanying text for the rest of the story...
